The battery in every BYD we sell passed a nail-penetration test that most packs fail — here's what that means for safety, lifespan, and the SOH numbers we print on every car page.
Every BYD electric and plug-in hybrid we sell uses BYD's own Blade Battery — a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pack built from many long, thin, blade-shaped cells arranged side by side inside a shared structural tray, instead of the many small pouch or cylindrical cells used in most other packs.
BYD's own published demonstration is the nail-penetration test: a steel nail is driven straight through a charged cell. In conventional high-density batteries this test usually causes fire or a violent thermal reaction. In BYD's test, the Blade Battery cell stayed cool enough to fry an egg on top of it — no fire, no explosion. It's BYD's own test, not an independent lab's, but it's become the company's signature safety demonstration and is widely referenced by automotive press when comparing battery chemistries.
The safety comes from chemistry, not just cell shape. Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) is inherently more thermally stable than the nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) chemistry used in many other EV batteries. NMC packs energy more densely — useful for range — but its chemistry is more prone to thermal runaway when damaged or overheated. LFP trades a little energy density for a chemistry that simply doesn't want to catch fire as easily, which is why it's become the default choice for BYD's mainstream lineup, including the models we sell.
The same chemistry that makes LFP hard to ignite also makes it wear more slowly. LFP cells generally tolerate more charge cycles before their usable capacity drops than NMC cells do, and they're less sensitive to being kept at a high state of charge for long periods — both common causes of gradual battery aging.
That's directly relevant to how we sell used EVs here. Every car on our site shows a measured battery State of Health (SOH) — the percentage of original capacity a battery can still hold, tested with an independent diagnostic tool rather than estimated. LFP's slower wear curve is a large part of why BYD's batteries tend to hold their SOH well even after years of daily use, which is what you're seeing reflected in the battery passport on each BYD listing.
LFP isn't magic, and Blade Battery isn't a guarantee against all wear. Extreme heat, deep discharge cycles, and simple age still affect any battery over time — that's exactly why we measure SOH on every car individually instead of assuming a number from the chemistry alone. Read the number on the car's own page; it's the real one.
